Dunedin Restaurants

Dunedin has a fantastic atmosphere and eating out in this wonderful city will be whatever you make it! From casual to ‘dress-up’ dining, there are a variety of Dunedin restaurants that will suit you.

The heart of Dunedin is the Octagon. It is home to a number of restaurants and bars (including The Jitsu, Mash Cafe & The Terrace), many with outdoor seating and live music.

From the Octagon you can walk to many tourist destinations. There is a lovely restaurant at the Dunedin Railway Station. It is one of the most photographed in the world. Birch St and Fryatt St both overlook the ocean, and are a short walk to many great places to eat!

Because of the large student population, many restaurants in Dunedin have great food at very ‘wallet friendly’ prices. This is also popular for family meals out. There are plenty of BYO restaurants too, so you can choose the exact bottle to enjoy with your meal!

You cannot make a trip to the Southland, NZ without sampling some of the amazing oysters. Some people say that Bluff Oysters are the best in the world. They are succulent and fat, and best eaten raw. But seafood in Otago is not just limited to Bluff Oysters! Be sure to try some smoked salmon, or brown trout. These will be on the menu at many of the top restaurants.

Venison is another New Zealand speciality and should be on the menu of any respectable restaurant.

You don’t have to eat the local delicacies. You can choose a venue with international cuisine. There are Thai, Mexican, and Italian restaurants aplenty, and even vegetarians will be spoilt for choice! There are also many buffet restaurants to choose from.

So whether you want fine dining or something more casual, Dunedin has got you covered.
